Program Background

Mission: Founded in 2021 , the mission of Urban Scholar Film Academy is to share the communal and creative process of filmmaking with urban youth (15-18 years of age) who reside within the city of Inglewood and surrounding communities.

 

Led by Imhotep Coleman, Veteran Assistant Director- (Un*Prisoned, 911 on Fox, Scandal, Southland,) and other industry professionals, our two year program, involves a yearly cohort of a dozen students, from the surrounding area, who will learn the process of scriptwriting and filmmaking through the following components:

DEVELOPMENT

YEAR 1

  • Participate in weekly 2-hour Saturday classes 10am-12pm (from October to May)

  • Assist industry professionals with the production of a short film, commerical, PSA, and music video. 

  • Take enrichment field trips to film/television sets, movie theaters & film festivals

  • Journal individual learning process  through a weekly confessional documentary

EXPERIENCE

YEAR 2

 

Prerequisite: The completion of year one training. Using year one training & academy film resources, year two scholars will collaborate with  their peers within their cohort to create a film portfolio: Promo/Teaser Video, Commerical, Music Video & Short Film. Portfolios will be showcased at an organizational film festival in partnership with corporate and community partners. 

 

At the completion of the program, scholars will use have producer credits on a short film,  a portfolio of content to use,  and a community of filmmakers and creatives  to collaborate with, as they begin their creative pursuits.
